How many pay periods or Payroll are there in a calendar year?

It is possible to have up to 52 pay periods per year, or as little as 12. Weekly Payroll

Employers who employ hourly workers often employ weekly pay in order for the calculation of 52 pay periods every year.

Biweekly Payroll

Employees receive 26 paychecks per year and a biweekly pay plan. Payroll costs could be increased with 27 pay intervals. Biweekly pay is offered to hourly and salaried employees.

Semimonthly Payroll

Employers can decide to pay employees on the 15th or first day of each month, or on the 16th or last day. Semimonthly pay is 24 pay periods, and it's the most frequently used method for salaried workers.

What's different about the Payroll Calendar in 2021?

In 2021 there will be 53 Fridays in 2021, meaning that employees will be able to expect 27 biweekly paychecks for the new year.

It will be contingent on whether your company sends paychecks out to employees on January 1 (which is a holiday). It is the first month in which employees will receive three checks per month. If that's the case, then the remaining three paycheck months in 2021 will comprise December and July.
