How many pay periods (or Payroll) are there in a single year?

A year may have up to 52 pay periods or only 12. Employers determine the number of pay periods, unless the workplace or state has particular payday requirements. The business owner must balance the cost of payroll with the financial requirements of their employees.

Biweekly Payroll

Employees are paid 26 paychecks each year, with biweekly pay schedule. Payroll expenses can increase if there are 27 pay period depending on the calendar year. Biweekly pay is typically received by salaried or hourly employees.

Semi-monthly Payroll

Employers who choose this schedule can pay their employees either the first or 15th of the month following or on the 16th day and last day of the month following. Semimonthly pay is a pay schedule that includes 24 pay periods and is most often used with salaried employees.

What's Different About the Payroll Calendar in 2021?

The 2021 Fridays will have 53 Fridays. This means that employees may receive 27 biweekly checks throughout the year.

It is crucial to know if your company is paying employees on a Friday, Jan. 1. This holiday is recognized as a holiday. If that's the case, it means employees now expect three paychecks in one month. If this is the case, the next three pay periods in 2021 are July and Dec.
